To understand what the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV), it is necessary to know first what the crankcase and what important operations occur in it. In this sense, goes without saying that this piece serves to seal the bottom of the engine and contain its operating parts -crankshaft, piston and rod – so that not between no dust or any agent that can spoil the mechanism.
Another task of the crankcase, and also of vital importance, is to contain the oil needed by the engine to run. In a tank, called a lower sump or oil sump, this attachment is stored for use again and consecutively, again and again, in order to keep the parts, especially the crankshaft bearings, lubricated.
Product of the above – described operation, the engine emits polluting gases that can not only damage its mechanism, but affect the environment. In order to reduce these effects, back in the 1960s, the PCV system was started, which, although it may vary in location or structure according to the engine brand, basically works in the same way in all of them.
What makes the PCV is to evacuate those harmful gases produced during combustion returning them to the cylinders to be utilized again in another process. At the same time, draws air into the crankcase oil to keep clean and maintain the balance of gases being returned to the intake manifold.
There are two classes of PCV, one open and one closed, which are distinguished essentially in that the first does not solve the problem of air pollution, while the second one does. What happens is that the open PCV receives fresh air through an air intake placed in the cap where oil is supplied to the engine. The system is ecological until at more revolutions, the gases force their exit through this conduit, polluting the environment.
For its part, the closed PCV most common today – it receives clean air through the engine air filter without the oil supply cap has an opening. In this way, this system prevents harmful gases from going outside and, on the contrary, recycles them to contribute to a new combustion.
Positive Crankcase Ventilation uses a valve, known as a flow control valve or PCV, which takes care of the expulsion and precise conduction of the gases, from the crankcase to the intake manifold.
